Respiration Harmony – Vinyasa Yoga: Vinyasa is a term that covers a broad range of yoga classes. The word Vinyasa means “motion in accord with respiration”. Slightly more vigorous than Hatha, Vinyasa involves the striking of sequence of positions in which the movement is accorded to the breath.
The Faster Type – Ashtanga Yoga: Traditionally embedded, Ashtanga, which signifies “eight limbs” in Sanskrit, is a rigorous style of Yoga. It involves the striking of a chain of poses in concord with breathing. The poses are not constant or held for a long period of time. In this style the poses stream from one position to another relentlessly. Ashtanga Yoga helps in spine alignment, removing unwanted substances from the body, increases strength, improves flexibility and builds stamina. The constant shift from one pose to another requires a lot of strength and stamina. During a class of 90 minutes, a series of poses including as much as 75 different positions are executed.
For Body Alignment- Iyengar Yoga: Founded by B.K.S. Iyengar fromIndia in 1975, this style focuses on bodily alignment by striking a set of poses thereby allowing the body to develop harmoniously in an anatomically correct way. The usage of supports such as chairs, blankets, straps and blocks is also encouraged. This style is emphasized for its therapeutic effects like elimination of aches and pains.
Vigorous type-Kundalini Yoga: Kundalini Yoga is rather mystic and reaches deeper levels of physical and mental elements. As in Vinyasa, the focus here is on the harmony of breath with body movement in but also with an objective to free the energy from the lower part of the body and cause it to surge upwards. There is a source of tremendous energy in the human body at the base of the spine. The techniques of Kundalini Yoga accomplish the unleashing of this energy to reach the seven chakras. The class includes executing a sequence of poses followed by meditation at the end of the song. Thee meditation may also associated with chants or songs.
Modern Yoga – Anusara Yoga: Anusara was founded by John Friend in 1997. Due to its easy routine and more so to its feel-good philospphy is one of the fastest growing styles of Yoga. The philosophy of Anusara is derived from Tantra, believing that everything existing in the universe has an intrinsic virtue. This transcends into their Yoga classes; for instance when a student makes an error in the pose he or she is first made to see the intrinsic beauty in the error before being corrected. Classes start with an invocation leading to practicing poses. Classes also consist of sermons on the Anusara philosophy.
Hot Yoga – Bikram Yoga: Established by Bikram Choudhury in the 1970s, is a selection of 26 asanas from the Hatha Yoga. The speciality of this type is that it is practices in a room where the temperature is increased to 35 °C. This causes expansion of the body muscles, relaxation of organ tissues and opening of body pores leading to sweating. According to Bikram Yoga philosophy, the sweating carries out the removal of toxins from the body.
